Workshops and Presentations

Group Stress

Work is a unique environment. We are often assigned to several groups, each with its demands and stresses.

Some stresses can be handled individually, others only by the group itself or several overlapping groups. Long work hours, impossible goals, setbacks, new directions, loss of staff, and failures hinder individuals and the group.

Burnout and Death

I cannot count the number of doctors and nurses who come to me worried that there is something wrong with them when they describe classic symptoms of burnout. Patient loss is particularly devastating.

With the pandemic, there aren’t enough bubble baths in the world to wash away the exhaustion and trauma.

What To Do?

Interactive workshops provide participants with techniques to ground themselves, name and express their feelings, deliver bad news, and know the signs and symptoms of burnout in time to do something about it. Staff will have the chance to practice these new skills and leave with multiple tools and strategies to mitigate burnout and find their passion and purpose again.

Participating in a workshop provides a great jumping-off point to build or reinvigorate self-care routines. Whatever the format, together, we will explore the life of their dreams, who they want to be, and how they want to feel in their work – and we will chart a course to get them there.

Why Workshops?

While hurt can be felt as a community, healing can also be accomplished in a community. That’s where workshops and presentations can be very beneficial.

Groups, like families, coworkers, classes, and even whole organizations or institutions, can address the need of many members at once while leveraging the inherent peer support of its members with a workshop.

Which Workshops?

I offer several in-person and online workshops on the following topics: helping the helpers, burnout prevention and mitigation, healthy boundaries at work and home, and having difficult conversations.

I have provided workshops for Fordham University Graduate School of Social Service, Nursing Unit Council Columbia Presbyterian, Montefiore Medical Center, Columbia University School of Medicine, Albert Einstein School of Medicine, The Gold Foundation, and the Social Work Hospice and Palliative Care Network national conference.

I also offer presentations on: Talking to Kids About Death, How Professional Grief Differs From Personal Grief, Modern Grief Theories, De-escalating Highly Emotional Situations, What to Do with Helplessness at the Bedside, What to Say and What Not to Say to a Grieving Person, Healthy Boundaries at Work and Home, Breaking Bad News, The Grief Recovery Method, and Trauma Stewardship.
